Allergen Statement on Alcohol

Label reading on booze is a bit different here in Australia to food. Ingredients do not need to be listed but all allergens must be declared, this includes allergens used in the preparation and processing.

For example, some wineries use wheat flour in a mixure they use to prep the wine barrels before they fill them wine.

On this bottle the warning statment says "Produced with the aid of milk products, traces may remain" and "Contains Sulphites". If wheat or any other gluten products were used in processing, this is where they have to be declared.

It tends to be cleanskins and cheaper wines where they are likely to use wheat in the barrels. I have been told the cheaper barrels need prepping whereas if they buy the good quality ones, this doesn't need to be done.

I have spoken to someone who go sick after drinking wine at a WA winery and the staff confirmed that they did in fact prep the barrels with wheat flour.

I bought this one at BWS to use in a chicken dish, as their are no gluten allergen warnings and only traces of milk, this one was safe for me to use.
